In 1972, Albert Hardison, with the help of his daughters, Susie, Sandy, and Linda, opened one of the first Submarine sandwich shops in Tulsa. By 1975, Big Al's Subs had relocated to the corner of 15th and Harvard, evolving into Big Al's Subs and Health Foods. Fresh Fruit Smoothies, Carrot Juice, and many vegetarian items were added to the menu with the very popular Sub Sandwiches. Tulsa University students and faculty were thrilled with the new menu, as these new items were not yet available in Tulsa.
On October 26, 1981, Albert D. Hardison, died suddenly of lung cancer. The family continued to operate the restaurant. Al's oldest daughter, Pat, bought Big Al's in 1985. Since that time, she and her children, have owned and operated the restaurant.
Currently Pat and her son John Albert R., Al's grandson, are keeping the tradition of quality food that is health conscious still the focus today.
Pat's oldest son Lan, who is the owner of Specialty Bakery of Tulsa, supplies of most of the bread products to Big Al's and many other restaurants across the United States.
Today Big Al's enjoys the memories that are shared when T.U. alumni visit and tell us how much they enjoy eating at Big Al's. Now they bring their children to show them the experience that they have had for many years. Many new items have been added to the menu over the years. Because people expect to have our wraps, burritos, salads, pitas, subs, real fruit smoothies, and fresh carrot juices, that have been a Tulsa favorite for many years, the most popular remain on the menu.
We hope you come and enjoy the Big Al's revolution and eat healthy.
